  • Interview by “HighLife” 2017 Issue #6

In this issue of HighLife, Mann Lao, the creative director, was invited to have an interview.

In the interview, Mann answered the question about why he has chosen Macau as his home base.
“I was born in Macau and I love Macau.I feel that I have to contribute to the wellbeing of this place. We, the people of Macau, have our own style. Macau has been in contact with the West for centuries, even longer than Hong Kong. We are the true pioneers when it comes to mixing elements of East and West.”

On the topic in which design are being commercialize, Mann believes that design needs to be commercial or else it turns into art. Moreover, the design result should not be what he likes or what the client prefers; it should serve the goal of successful branding the product for the market. In other words, it should be what the market needs.

In addition to the design market, Mann also shared about the rewards he gets from teaching. “I learn the most when I was educating others. Our local designers have to broaden their vision and seize the chance to learn from each other. It is important to get inspired and contribute to the world. In return, we will make a more meaningful, efficient and profitable environment for Macau designers.”
